Old Sarum Primary School

British Values

At Old Sarum Primary, we teach and promote British Values because they help children understand how our country works and how people should treat one another. British Values are part of everyday school life, supporting children to develop respect, responsibility and confidence. We want families to feel reassured that these values are taught in an age-appropriate way that matches our school community and the needs of primary learners.

Our approach includes encouraging children to respect different faiths and beliefs, and to understand that everyone has the right to be listened to. We also support pupils to learn about democracy by practising listening to others, taking turns and contributing ideas in class. Children are taught about the rule of law through clear routines and consistent expectations, helping them understand that rules keep people safe and fair. Through these experiences, pupils learn that their actions have consequences and that they can make positive choices.

British Values also include supporting children to develop tolerance and kindness, especially when they meet differences in people, opinions or backgrounds. We encourage pupils to work collaboratively, celebrate diversity and resolve issues calmly. For parents, this means you can reinforce the same messages at home- talking about fairness, listening to others and encouraging children to be respectful. Together, we can help children grow into thoughtful citizens who contribute positively to their school, community and wider society.
