Old Sarum Primary School

Music at Old Sarum Primary

Intent – vision

We aim to encourage all children to feel they are musical and develop a life- long love of music. We want children to respect and appreciate music from across the world and across generations.

Our curriculum is designed to have a holistic approach to music and individual strands of performance, listening, composing, history of music and the inter-related disciplines of music are woven together to create engaging and enriching experiences. Children learn about pitch, duration, timbre, tempo, structure, texture and dynamic. Children are given opportunities to study music from across the world and across generations. Through the curriculum children develop a range of skills including, team-work, leadership. Creative thinking, presentation and performance skills.

Implementation – how we teach

Music is taught in five week units each half term and each unit combines the strands of performing, listening, composing, the history of music and inter related dimensions of music in varied contexts to reflect a range of styles and traditions.

We have weekly whole school singing assemblies and ensure that our children have opportunities to sing and perform to parents and wider audiences during the year.

Impact – what this means for our children

That children will be able to:

  • Sing fluently and expressively.

  • Play tuned and untuned instruments with control and accuracy.

  • Recognised what is meant by pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and dynamics.

The impact can be constantly monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. At the end of each unit there is often a performance element where teachers can make a summative assessment of pupils’ learning. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils by providing a highly visual record of the key learning from the unit, encouraging recall of practical skills, key knowledge and vocabulary. Floorbooks help to capture the learning journey in each class and helps us to monitor impact.
