Old Sarum Primary School

Music at Old Sarum Primary

Vision

To encourage all children to feel they are musical and develop a life- long love of music. We want children to respect and appreciate music from across the world and across generations.

Our curriculum is designed to have a holistic approach to music and individual strands of performance, listening, composing, history of music and the inter- related disciplines of music are woven together to create engaging and enriching experiences. Children learn about pitch, duration, timbre, tempo, structure, texture and dynamic. Children are given opportunities to study music from across the world and across generations. Through the curriculum children develop a range of skills including, team-work, leadership. Creative thinking, presentation and performance skills.

How it is taught and why

Music is taught in five week units each half term and each unit combines the strands of performing, listening, composing, the history of music and inter related dimensions of music in varied contexts to reflect a range of styles and traditions.

We have weekly whole school singing assemblies and ensure that our children have opportunities to sing and perform to parents during the year and to the wider community where possible.

Our aim is that children will

  • Sing fluently and expressively.

  • Play tuned and untuned instruments with control and accuracy.

  • Recognised what is meant by pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and dynamics.

Assessment

The impact can be constantly monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. Each lesson includes guidance to support teachers in assessing pupils against the learning objectives and at the end of each unit there is often a performance element where teachers can make a summative assessment of pupils’ learning. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils by providing a highly visual record of the key learning from the unit, encouraging recall of practical skills, key knowledge and vocabulary. Pupil voice is also used as an assessment tool.
